Darcie Miner

Loneliness Anonymous
Written by Gina Tutko-Usalis / August 2009

Darcie Miner. She started out by singing solos in the elementary school choir and now is a familiar name in the music scene of Harrisburg and surrounding areas. Born in the 1980’s – her first performance at the age of thirteen with guitar in hand was at Media Play. It was awkward and not very good she claims and jokes that the location is now a Value City! Her mother is very creative and her father musical but Darcie is unsure where her style of music comes from. She has never had vocal lessons, plays guitar and a little piano. “I will mess around with any instrument I can get my hands on, but I am not always skilled with every one,” she said.

This Americana Roots singer/songwriter does home demos constantly. Her vibe is sometimes sassy and raw with songs like “Come Pick Me Up” (a Ryan Adams song she covered) which to me has that cockiness and anthem style of another artist – Pink. Then you have songs like “Fly”, “Vulnerability” and “24” which have the flare of Sheryl Crow, Jennifer Nettles or Carrie Underwood. Darcie seems to wear her heart on her sleeve with romance and life’s disappointments but also verbalizes that she is a strong woman who moves on in life. Lately, she is enjoying playing “Loneliness” live with the full band. Look for the song to surface on the new CD.

Darcie is the first to tell you that a talented person is a talented person regardless of gender or appearance. Her belief is you must be confident and comfortable with yourself. When speaking about the social culture – her opinion is religion and politics do not play as much of a role in music as they did in the 60’s. Although she enjoys many artists, she is more influenced by life, relationships, nature, art, beautiful & sad things, interesting men and women in history, etc. She writes her own songs and is very influenced by such elements. When asked if there is anyone she would like to collaborate or write a song with she said, “Truth be told, I suck at co-songwriting. If I were good at it and had the option of choosing anyone to write with – that’s a hard question …there are many, many great writers; I cannot choose!”

This versatile artist would like to support herself by being creative every day for the rest of her life and get paid for it. She loves to perform and make music full time. “For me, a good song is intimate and overwhelming. It’s hard to share with others if you aren’t coming from a genuine place; and it’s hard for the audience to really feel intimacy if you are not writing your truth. Performances are memorable for various reasons whether it is a particular venue that is incredible or other artists on the bill which are like gods to me, or the audience is really into it, etc. Also a good performance depends on a GOOD SOUND SYSTEM. Sometimes a show can me memorable for not so good reasons like bad sound, wardrobe malfunctions, etc. or hey … remember that time we were on our way to the Mercury Lounge and the bus caught on fire? True story!”

In her dream world, she would love to open for Bruce Springsteen but since Bruce never has openers and since it is Darcie’s fantasy she wouldn’t mind opening for Tom Petty either. If it was her touring and she had the ability to afford a supporting act, she would probably pick one of her friends to open, that way afterwards she would have a drinking buddy! As you may or may not know Darcie likes unicorns. So I was not surprised when I asked her, “Where would you love to perform?” and she replied, “The Drunken Unicorn for obvious reasons.” The Drunken Unicorn located in Atlanta, Georgia has a reputation for being a dirty, alluring, claustrophobic venue that is covered in unicorns. Rumor has it if you have work the next morning, you would be calling in sick as the venue is open all night. The odds of getting a good night sleep are about zilch when you flounder in and flop on the bed without brushing your pearly whites.

Be sure to get yourself a copy of Darcie Miner’s new CD Loneliness Anonymous due for release in October. Check out her website as it will be plastered all over in the upcoming months. The new album will be available under InDMiner Records and will also be available via iTunes International.

Keep a musical ear out for this artist as she undoubtedly has that star quality. I wish her copious amounts of success in her future endeavors. For sure she has the talent that can cultivate sublime achievements in the music world if only there was a supporting budget and the resources.

My conclusive comment to Darcie was “You are good enough to reach for the stars … so what are you waiting for??

She replied, “Waiting for NASA to call so I can hitch a ride!”
