PA Music Scene Reviews by Jason Knorr
When PA Music Scene approached me about reviewing their CD submissions, a feeling of anxious excitement began to rise in me. The excitement wasn’t because of all the people that would get to see my name, or read the words that I write, and it wasn’t because I was asked to be a part of an honest effort to endorse all of the hard working musicians in the area. This excitement I felt was because I knew I would be getting a steady stream of incredible local music for me to indulge myself in on a regular basis. There is nothing I love more then listening to the unfiltered work of musicians that are not limited on the way they have to create music. This area is a wealth of amazing musicians, songwriters, and bands, and I had just hit the jackpot on getting to hear quite a few of them. As a musician who gigs quite regularly, and being a father of two little girls, I don’t get a chance to get out and see the never ending expanse of talented musicians and bands in the area as much as I would like to.
I took on the responsibility on the condition that I would be allowed to give an honest and objective review of the works submitted. I will grade submissions on packaging, songwriting, and recording quality. I will not belittle or downgrade artists whose submissions may be less then stellar, but I will give some creative criticism on how they could make their next effort better. I feel the whole purpose of a review is to rate your current work, and to give you a general idea of what you can do to improve. I don’t care who you are or what you have accomplished; there is always room for improvement. As Winston Churchill once said “Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.”
